The anticipation of running the marathon is always alot of fun.  As usual, St. George put on another great marathon.

Me and my family are lucky enough to be old highschool friends with the Lee's and they let us stay with them in their Pleastant Palms Condo (A great place for a family to stay in St. George). Tom even drove me, Kim and Jeff to catch the buses.

As the weatherman had forecasted, it was a hot day for running a marathon.  Last year when I ran the UVM it was cold and rainy and I got a sub 3.  I do much better in cooler weather.  However, this year was the most miles I'd ever put into a marathon and I ran in the heat at lunch time a lot so I thought I may be able to get away from the cramping that I usually get when the temperatures get in the high 60's and 70's.

I went out at a 2:52 pace which I thought I could get if I had a near perfect marathon.  I was running well and felt like I could do it the first half of the marathon but about that time I could tell my legs weren't feeling as fresh as I thought they should.  I was still pushing well but I was starting to guess that my legs weren't going to hold up.  I probably should have backed off the pace around my 14 or 15 but I just couldn't give up the goal when my legs were still putting out at goal pace.  I usually drank two glasses of Gatorade at each aid station and ate quite a few bananas and oranges slices but it didn't do the trick.  By mile 20 I knew my legs weren't going to make it and so after I was walking and jogging due to cramping.  At that time I shifted my goal to a sub 3, but I soon realized no matter how much I wanted a sub 3 my legs were going to tell me what to do and I couldn't command them.

I was a little disappointed that my training didn't stop the cramping but it was good to see how weather affects me and how I may need to shift my goal times.

Morning run, rainy, temp. 40'

I wasn't planning on running this morning but I got woken up by Dallas with just enough time to get a 4 miler in, so I decided it was time to give the legs a little trial run to see if they still worked after the SGM.  Everything worked, but not enough freshness in the legs which is totally understandable.  Also, near the end of the run my right foot big toe kind of went numb. Weird.  Maybe the large volume of ice cream I've been eating isn't good for me.

I totally enjoyed the cool weather.  Looks like we missed the perfect SGM weather by one week.

Went outside to get ready to jog and it was cold.  My body told me to go back inside or run fast so it could warm up.  I choose run fast.  Maybe not the smartest thing to do the week after the marathon but I don't always do the smartest thing.

I did 6 sub 6 strides.  They were much harder than normal.  I still must have a ways to go to recover fully from the marathon.

The SOJO half was a pretty good run.  The elevation from the start to the finish is about a 500 foot drop.  The temperature just before the sun came up was 60' and it was windy.  The race started only 3 miles from my home so I dropped my car off Friday night at the finish and had Taunia drop me off at the start 10 minutes before the 7:45 AM starting time.  Much better than getting up early.

I took a quick bathroom check, made it to the starting line, talked to a few neighbors running the race and then away we went.  I liked the course because I've run on almost all of the course from time to time.

It didn't take to long until John from SLC, maybe in his late 20's took off by himself and left me, George from SJ, Arianne from Eagle Mtn. and Zac from WJ in the next group.  John was running about 20 seconds per mile faster than us so it didn't take to long until he was out of sight.  The 4 of use ran together until the temple hill, where Zac let us go.  I like Zac because he said he wanted to be like me when he gets old.  Then the pack was down to 3.  Me, Arianne and George who I found out was 54.  The pressure was on because I didn't want to get chicked or beaten by a guy 8 years older than myself.  At about mile 5 the George put some distance on us.  At about mile 6 I finally pushed ahead of Arianne and was in 3rd place.  I didn't catch the George until mile 9.  We ran together for a mile then he started fading so I was in 2nd place just where I wanted to be.  On the last two miles of the river path my left quad started acting like it wanted to cramp a little so I slowed it down and kept looking behind just in case someone would catch me.  They never got close so I could just stroll in.

I had a great race and it made me feel a little better about not going sub 3 at SG.

After the race I ate a couple of Fat Boys, yum, and yogart and chicken sandwich and walked back on the course 2.25 miles and waited for Andy Russell.  He was hoping for a 3:30 but he went out to fast the 1st half of the marathon and died at the end.  It was getting warm for a marathon and windy by the end.  I paced him in but he was dead and his legs were cramping a little.  It was good to see him again.  He had a great time of 3:43 for someone 240lbs.

Perfect day for an easy run.  Legs still need some time after the half marathon before they'll be ready to speed up.

Another fabulos day for a run. I'd like to be pushing the pace more but the SGM and the SOJO half must have worn me down so I took it easy.

Probably wont be seeing any more noon runs at 70's this year.  Today felt harder than it should have.  Maybe giving blood Thursday and non-stop eating of junk food over the weekend isn't good for running.

Afternoon run, Sunny, Temp. 55'

This morning I put the nice Treadmill I purchased from Paul together and it actually works great.  I mostly purchased it for Cambrey but I wanted to get a good one so I could use it occasionally.  Cambrey isn't sure enough footed to walk out during the winter months and this is one of the few exercises she can do well by herself.

I ran 1 mile on the treadmill then went out and did 5.55 in some new saucony's that don't have much of a heel on them.
