Noon run, sunny, temp. 80'

Nice day for an easy run by the Jordan river.  The river was very high and muddy today.  The hot weather must be melting the snow.

One last speed workout so my legs don't forget I want to go fast for the UVM Saturday.

I felt good before the run and was hoping for 6:15 mile avg. for 3 miles.  I ended up with 6:22.  Maybe not enough speed workouts.  Not mentally tough as I should be for the fast miles.  Anyway, all easy and short runs until Saturday.

Noon run, sunny, temp 80'

I felt like pushing the pace a little since I'm not putting in long miles.

I haven't run a sub 3 marathon since 2003 when I ran a 2:59 at the steep down hill 24th of July marathon.  Then I have to go back to 2000 at St. George.  For some reason I'm doubting my ability to go sub 3 at my old age but I'm going to try.

Nice relaxing run.  Wont run tomorrow.  I assume that's a good idea.

All system ready for take-off Saturday morning.

Today is my 22nd Wedding Anniversary with the lovely Taunia, which happens to be one of the best decisions I've ever made.

It was cloudy with a temp. of 45' at the starting line and just before the race it started to sprinkle.  It was fine for the first 6 miles then it started to rain.  It rained for about the next 6-8 miles then it was over for the rest of the race with a finish line temp of about 55'.

I did not jog before the race.  Just walked about a half mile and stretched out.  I started the race trying not to go to fast knowing that I always cramp up near the end of the race.  I hit the half way point at almost exactly were I'd planned, 90 minutes.  I was feeling good and getting my hopes up that maybe, just maybe, I could run all the way to the finish line.  At mile 17 I got a little knot in my left calf that was a different feeling than cramping up.  I felt it most the way in at different levels but it never effected the race.

At mile 21 I was really getting my hopes up, but I could tell that my legs were getting pounded.  I wanted to break lose with some 6:20 miles but I knew that would increase the odds of cramping.  At mile 23 my legs were definately letting me know that they were not going to hold out to much longer.  I had plenty of energy and mental toughness but not the legs to do it with.  I kept up the pace and it wasn't until mile 25.5 that my legs started shutting down and I had to slow down and do some funny shuffle type running.  There was a guy that was in my age division that I let pass me at mile 24 and was hoping to pass him at the end but I just had to be happy with a sub 3.

Eating:  I ate a homemade wheat bread sandwich and a half a banana 2hrs before the race.  I had a half a banana 5 minutes before the race.  At mile 9 I had a half a gel, mile 11 quarter banana, mile 15 half gel, mile 19 quarter banana, mile 24 quarter banana.  I had poweraid at all stations.
