Paul (RivertonPaul) I excluded you from the group above because you beat me in St. George, which means I always have to worry about you even if I increase my miles.

Tom, Paul Thomas, and Cal still haven't proven that they can beat me yet if I get my training going well. They make excuses about injuries and stuff. Blah, blah, blah.

For me the lower back issues and the bum-itis are related.

From Terry on Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 10:08:29

Actually my left leg hamstring was hurting a little with my left lower back. But it seems that my bum-itis isn't related to back problems unless I have a continues back problem that wont heal. Hopefully that's not the case.

It seems to have been a tough winter for running, at least it has been for me. My weekly mileage is also way down compared to last year. I keep thinking (hoping) the icky weather is going to end soon. I actually had a pretty good run today, and I'd like to start stringing a few more of them together. I'm finally beginning to feel a little like a runner again.

This run was sponsored by Cal even if he didn't know it.  I'd had enough of running easy and Cal had been ripping off these fast runs so I thought I'd give it a try.  It was painful and it hurt.  The good thing about it was my lower back pain that is very mild quit hurting after about a mile because there was to much pain elsewhere to be able to detect the back pain.

Terry my attempts at HMP tempo runs haven't gone so well either the last couple of weeks. Looking at the Provo 1/2 course (I entered it into the Course Tool), I'm not feeling so confident about a sub 1:30. Maybe more like 1:32-1:33. But then again maybe some magic will happen the next 3 weeks and it will be better than I'm thinking. My current thoughts are to go out around 7-min pace and see what happens.

Hope your heel gets feeling happier.

I realy enjoyed the course. I liked that it was only 10 minutes from my home. To bad the wind had to blow so hard. I held back a little because I'm going to run another half marathon next week and I didn't know what kind of shape I was in due to the lack of speed work I've been doing. The race was much more enjoyable holding back just a little. The last two miles I decided to let loose and really run. My tendon-bum-itis didn't like that to much.

It was good seeing RivertonPaul, Walter, Shimelle and husband, Peggy and I think Annette Lynnette that was running with her. Miles are as follows

1 - 6:44 I ran with Peggy & Lynnette for the first 3 miles.  They were the perfect pace so I wouldn't go out to fast.

2 - 6:56

3 - 7:09 20:48

4 - 7:02

5 - 7:16 Against the wind miles 5-8

6 - 7:40 42:46

7 - 7:33 The desire to really kick into the next gear and push hard was still there in my old age.  I suppressed it until the last two miles.  I need to get into better shape before I can really push a half marathon like I want to.

8 - 7:35

9 - 6:51 1:04:45

Nice race, Terry. I'd be thrilled with a 1:32 at the Provo City half this weekend. I'll be happy to break 1:40. I'm behind where I was last year in my training, but at least things are headed in the right direction.

It will be good to see you and Tom Saturday, even if it is only before and after the race. I won't be seeing much of you during the race, except maybe your backs as you pull away at the start.

We sure miss the two of you and wish you were back on the relay team. Cory's out because of his foot, and Scott B. and Greg W. have conflicts and won't be able to run with us this year. Tom's already made some lame excuse about being out of the country that weekend. If your other plans haven't materialized, we'd certainly welcome you back with open arms. If you know of anyone who is interested and would be a good fit for our team, please let us know.

Enjoy the cold running this week (sarcasm). I hope the weather improves for Saturday.

Our Wasatch Back relay team had a team run up Butterfield Canyon.  We had 7 members show up which I though was great considering the weather.

I ran with James and Brian.  Brian was only doing 4 miles and James and I were doing 10 miles.  Brian and James were going much faster than I'd have chosen but I decide to stay with them knowing it would only last for two miles.  After Brian turned back I slowed down plenty. James didn't like the slow pace but he didn't have much of a choice because he'd never been up the canyon and didn't have a Garmin.  James is 18 and on Bingham High track team. As we turned around to go back down the canyon James took a pit stop and I kept going.  He caught me with 1 mile left.  He was doing 4:55 mile avg. when he passed me.  I decided to keep up and after about a half a mile I was done but James's shoe came untied so I slowed way down and with about a quarter mile left James caught me again and the fast speed was on again.

I did about 8:45's up the canyon and about 6:25's down with the last mile in 5:45.

Taunia even came and did 5 miles in 55:00

I ran hard but my 4th mile was in 7:04 and I couldn't get the wheels turning like I wanted. I ended up with a 6:43 avg. also. Maybe it is I that needs to start worrying. Dang Tom.

Also Terry don't forget that when Nate and I did the 6:43 paced tempo it was a full 10K (6.2 miles, not 6) and we had a nasty headwind for 1/2 the run. I think we could have done 6:40 without the wind.

Now for your next challenge... Yesterday I did a 5K tempo run at 6:24 ave pace (19:52). Just wanted to see if I could still go under 20. It hurt bad but today I feel pretty good.

I ran the Ephraim Scandinavian Day 10K which ended up being a 5.47 mile run.  I ran ok but the runner that won was a freshman on the USU track team so he won by over 2 minutes.

Tanner, Dallas, and Taunia ran the 5K, Tanner got 5th with a 22:00, Dallas got 26 and Taunia 27.  Uncle Danny just beat Taunia by less than a block.

Time 35:16,  Mile avg. - 6:27 or about a 40 minute 10K.

I wanted to accomplish two goals on this run.  Run the entire 6.6 miles in under 7 minute mile pace and run 3 of the miles in a 6:20 mile pace.

Everything was looking good until 2.3 miles into my fast 3 miles.  My left quad started to cramp just a little.  Last time it did that I kept running and then it hurt for 3 or 4 days so I was smarter this time and just stopped my run and waited 2 or 3 minutes for my legs to gain back strenght.  I then commenced again but not at the 6:20 pace.  I'm getting to old.  Every time I try to get faster something always comes up.  At least I got my under 7 goal.

Cal, I'm doing leg #1. Maybe well see you at the start, and throughout the race. Our van has a fast runner for the 1st leg and last leg, all the middle runners are on the slower end of running. Don't pass us to soon in the race.

Team "2 Slow 2 Win 2 Dumb 2 Quit" will miss having you (and Tom) with us this year, Terry, but I hope you have a great time with the South Jordan Slackers.

We start at 1:00pm, and are projected to finish in about 26:45 (see how much we miss you and Tom). I'm runner 8 so I won't be at the start, but Verdon, Will, Steve and Ryan (and a couple of new guys) will be. Maybe I'll run into you along the way.

I ran the Utah Valley Marathon as a slow training run (3:50) Saturday. I'm feeling pretty good, but time will tell how smart that decision was. I hope I survive this weekend.

When you're considering next year's relay plans, please give some thought to rejoining us. We'd love to have you back.

I got to run 4 legs of the Ragnar WBR.  I was runner number 1 on team #432 - South Jordan Slackers.  Our team had a great time and I think most people want to do it again next year.  The weather was better for running compared to the last two years even thought it rained on us.  I'll take rain and 60' over sun and 90'.

#1 leg - 12:45PM - 5.1 miles, time 34:00,  Mile avg. - 6:40,  Mostly flat (Garmin didn't sink until half way through run.

#13 leg - 9:45PM - 8.50 miles, time 54:20,  Mile avg. - 6:23, One mile up and 7.5 miles down hill.

#25 leg - 8:30AM - 4.88 miles,  time 35:06,  Mile avg. - 7:11,  Slightly up hill.  I took it easy knowing I had to run another leg.

#35 leg - 3:30PM - 7.3 miles, Time 49:20,  Mile avg. - 6:45,  1.5 miles steep up and about 7 steep down.  I forgot my garmin when I swithed vans.  My quads were aching so I didn't push it due to fear of legs cramping up.

I think my team got 168 out of about 670 teams which puts us at the 25% mark.  We had six women but were regestered as a male team.  We started out with 7 men but one got injured a couple weeks before the race.

Our team had Taunia, Don, Andrea, Cheri, James, Julie, Chad, Matt, Abbi, John and Sue.

I ran the Murray 5K with 7 other people from our WBR team.  We all wore our Slacker shirts which made it easy to spot each other.  I was hoping to do the race in 18:30 but I didn't quit pull it out.  I haven't been doing enough speed work to get myself mentally prepared for 3 miles of pain or I just don't care as much about pushing as I did in my younger age.

The race was nice.  It had an out and back part and then ran around the park to the finish line.  Mile one was a little up hill and I hit it in 6:00.  Mile two came back down the hill but finished with a little hill which I got in 5:57.  Mile 3 was about even in total elevation with a few small rolling hills which I ran in 6:06.  I pushed the last 0.12 miles in 5:00 average.  I liked the simple course but I need to do more training for a 5K if I want to do get my time down.

Taunia got a 26:45 along with Abbi.  Matt got a 21:01, Sue got a PR of about a minute with a 25:13 and her husband John beat her by about 45 seconds.  This was April's first race ever  and she was only about 5-10 seconds behind Taunia and Abbi.  Julie got a PR of almost 2 minutes with a 31:17

Cal,

I'm going to run the Provo Half on August 8th.

I'm trying a new technique over the next 3 weeks befor the Provo Half. If my schedule works I'm going to run only 4 days a week with runs on Mon, Wed, Fri below 7 minute mile avg. and a Saturday long run below 8 minute mile avg. The idea is to get use to running hard 3 days a week with a rest day before each run so I can do it. To me it is more of a mental preparation of getting use to pushing the pace.

It was a perfect day for the Provo River Half Marathon.  The temperature was probably around 50' at the start.  Cold for standing and waiting but great for running.  It was nice seeing some running friends before and after the race.  The Lee's are pretty cool people.

Anyway, I decided that I would run at 1:25 half marathon pace or stay with Tom Lee which ever was faster. I stayed with Tom for about 3 or 4 miles then he slowly let me inch my way ahead of him.

Mile 1 - 6:18,  Mile 2 - 6:17,  Mile 3 - 6:23

Mile 4 - 6:14,  Mile 5 - 6:39,  Mile 6 - 6:29

Mile 10 - 6:15, Mile 11 - 6:36, Mile 12 - 6:34

Mile 13 - 6:14

I didn't warm up enough because the 1st mile was hard.  My legs didn't want to run and I was getting worried that this wasn't going to be a good race, but then I started to feel like a runner again and I knew things would be fine.  The race went well and with 5 miles left I thought I'd push just a little harder.  It worked for a few miles but then I started feeling tired and my mind kept telling me to slow down.  I kinda listened to that lazy guy and slowed down.  However, with a mile left I realized that I could break 1:25 and I push hard again and realized that I wasn't as tired as that lazy guy was telling me.

We were on a ward campout at Brighton Meadows just past Park City a few miles.  I ran very easy and enjoyed the nature.  I saw Elk, Moose, Deer, sage hens, and a porcupine.  The moose were a little scary because they were in the road and didn't move for awhile.

In the afternoon I went running with Taunia.

I decided I'd go fast because I'm running 5.2 miles in the marathon relay Saturday.  I was hoping for 6:30 miles.  I did the 1st mile in 6:32, the 2nd mile in 6:35 and then it got a lot worse.  Hopefully, I'll run better Saturday.

Got home from work just as the sun was setting.  Kenna wanted to go with me so I dusted off the jogging stroller and pumped up the tires and pushed her on the run.  I might want to reconsider taking her.  She always wants me to go faster.

Marathon relay morning.  Temp 60'

After the last two nights of getting less than 6 hours of sleep, I woke up tired but racing still felt like the fun thing to do.  I was on Matt's team.  I met all but one of our team members.  I had to go to a scout meeting at 8:30, so I had to leave right after running.  I would have liked to hang around awhile and talk but I wasn't to be.

I was our 1st runner.  They yelled GO and I was off.  I tried to start off easy and I thought I was but after about a third of a mile into the race I checked the garmin and I was sub 6.  It wasn't long after that, that I started to feel the pain of going fast.  I lost confidence mid way through the race when the pain levels get high.  I thought of all the reasons why I shouldn't run fast.  I slipped from 3rd place to 4th.  Mile 3 was my slowest.  Then I toughened back up and got going again.  I moved into 3rd place and stayed their the rest of the way.

For the rest of my teams great effort see Matts blog

Terry thanks again for your help. You were awesome. I just finished my little write up. I have finisher’s medals but I am also trying to figure out if we got 1st place ones for the mixed division. I will let you know when I do and drop it by. Todd still hasn't published the official results. I am kind of guessing they won't break it out by legs because without the band they probably weren't keeping track. It was a lot of fun. I'll talk to you soon and enjoy the re retirement.

Terry 6.66 seems kind of evil for a run distance.
