Nice job starting the year out with a good run. It was 0 degrees with wind chill -10 when we woke up so we're holding out for another hour or so in hopes of sun and teen temps. The trick will be finding any clear roads.

Hope you and the family have a great 2011 Terry!

The two mile run seems to be getting harder each time.  I must be getting slowly out of shape, or maybe it's the weight gain, or maybe to much candy and icecream, or maybe it's the winter blues or maybe I'm getting older and slower each day.

I felt good today, I actually got enough sleep last night and yesterday was a rest day.  Anyway I was moving along the first couple miles at 7:20's thinking that I was going a little faster than I really needed to and then I spotted this white haired guy a 150 yards up the trail that was moving pretty fast.  The race instinct kicked in and I passed him after awhile.  He then stayed close to me so I picked it up a little more until I couldn't hear him.  By then it was to late and I just kept going fast.  The last mile was pretty tough.  Definately a good workout for January.

I didn't run yesterday because the night before my heart was beating irregular for about 20 minutes.  It may sound strange to those that think I'm heartless, but it was a little scary.  I'm going to see the Doc today and see if he can make any sense of it.

From TBean on Sun, Feb 13, 2011 at 23:17:43 from 65.44.125.14

Born to run got me thinking about it and I've looked at some YouTube video's and decided to give it a try. It sounded fun to tinker with my running style with hopes of less injuries. I ran on the grass a bit but there was snow every other step. The grass felt much better than the payment but it was cold in the snow.

Ran a mile then went BF on path for about .6 and then .15 on grass.  My feet don't feel any tougher after three tries.  I'll keep it up for awhile and see what happens.  BFOG is way easy compared to the path.  I feel like I could run 5 miles no problem BFOG.  Now if someone would make a grass path next to the river path I'd be set.

Maybe those BF type sandles are the way to go.

I did try my new $20 Huaraches type sandal on the treadmill today and they worked very well, much easier on the surface of the foot.  The BF feeling is close to the same but no worries about pebbles or glass or the rough treadmill track.  Just like going BF there is no cushion so you wont be landing on your heels.

Nice run, you have got to love this weather. I'm not certain where your barefoot goal is heading but this is my experience. I did about a month of all barefoot (on asphalt and pavement) last May. My feet got to fast for the skin on the bottom of my feat (lots of blisters and not enough patience). I switched to a racing flat (made the transistion to a fore-foot strike - went from 20 to 50 miles per week)through the end of August and then got into a pair of Vibrams (difinately different than the racing flats - I am currently doing 60-70 miles a week in the Vibrams).

From TBean on Thu, Mar 10, 2011 at 15:15:08 from 63.241.173.64

Chad, I'm not sure were my BF running is heading but I do want to learn the BF stride and strenght my feet. Maybe then I'd start putting some miles on a minimalist shoe or Vibrams.

The one thing I'm trying to do is make a slow transition.

From Chad Robinson on Thu, Mar 10, 2011 at 16:25:16 from 67.136.62.186

I found my biggest transition was getting my calves, achilles, ankles and feet used to a fore/mid foot strike over an increased distance. It did help that I was starting from a relative low baseline (recovery from a collapsed lung from a gun shot wound Noveber of 2009) for training so I was slowly building mileage as it was. There was still a difference from the racing flats to Vibrams. Vibrams definately simmulate barefoot well minus the hot spots (most of my running is done at night so it is nice having the extra barrier for my feet).

I convinced Dallas to go with me even though he'd played two basketball games earlier in the day.  I thought Dallas would be a little tired and it would be a good day to try out my sandles for a longer run.  The sandles worked great but my lower calf muscles still need to build up to take the different BF stride.

Dallas wasn't near as tired as I thought he'd be.  As with any youngster the closer we got to home the faster he went.  We sprinted the last 100 yards.

From Tom on Mon, Mar 14, 2011 at 12:44:31 from 137.65.56.16

So how much did the spiffy sandals cost? (in terms of $$ not seconds:))

From TBean on Mon, Mar 14, 2011 at 16:02:40 from 63.241.173.64

The sandals cost $20 + $6 shipping or $26. The sole comes as a 8"*11" sheet of rubber. I then had to trace my foot on the sheet and then cut the soul out with a pair of scissors and then punch the three holes in them and thread the laces.

I kinda felt like the Tarahumara making scandals.

So when you do your BF'n do you run with your running shoes laced together and hanging around your neck?

Nice to have the update on Cambrey yesterday, I just wish it were a little better news! I also wish I knew what we could do for her...and for you and Taunia! I'm glad you are able to get out and run to clear your mind. Is Taunia able to have some down time too? You and your cute family are constantly in our prayers!

I wish I could lace the shoes and hang them around my neck by my running stlye is not stealth enough for that. I just carry them in my hands. I'm sure most people that see me think I'm weird... and they are right.

Taunia spends more time with Cambrey than with a newborn baby. Taunia's lifestlye has changed almost as much as Cambreys. They are both managing the new schedules but it's not always fun.

We drove home and tried to do an easy two mile run but Dallas got a side ache after only a few hundred yards.  We gave up and came home.

The Cookie was tied for 2nd.  At just over the mile mark I moved into 4th.  About 1.75 miles into the race I moved into third with the cookie in 2nd only about 15 yards in front of me.  With about .75 miles to go I passed the cookie.  I pushed much harder than I like to but I wanted to beat the cookie and get that dumb hat.  The cookie ended up about 10 seconds behind me.

Mile splits (6:11, 6:17, 5:54)

I got a plaque, a $50 gift certificate to the Wild Rose resaurant, the hat, and a box of girl scout cookies!

My left foot developed a pain around the ball of my foot, most likely an inflamed tendon. The pain only hurts when I go BF.

I'm planning on trying it again soon if I can do it pain free. What I'm currently trying is to not heel strike but just to land flat on my foot.

From Tom on Thu, May 19, 2011 at 17:36:14 from 137.65.56.16

I've spent a lot of time myself trying to get off my heels and land on the mid-foot. I've gotten better but it sure has been hard just to make minor improvements. I've found the faster I run the less I heel strike. BTW not sure if you've seen the book "Chi Running" but it has a lot of info on form improvement that helped me alot.

I need an update on Cambrey! Did you guys quit doing the carepages? I sure hope she is seeing little and big miracles coming her way all the time!

From TBean on Thu, May 26, 2011 at 19:27:10 from 63.241.173.64

Cambrey has definately improved over the months, however, it is the slow type of recovery and not the big miracles yet. Maybe it's just a miracle she's with us at all.

The latest in small miracles is that she moved her big toe up and down about a quarter of an inch. She only could do it a couple of times in a row but she moved it.

Sounds like a great time in the Uintas. Hope the back is good to you, doing wild and crazy things like jumping small streams can be dangerous for old fellers like us.

Yesterday my back was acting up so I didn't run.  I woke up last night and the back was really hurting, probably slept on it wrong so I took a few IBP's.  It felt ok in the morning so I went jogging with Dallas since I'm taking a two day Staycation.  We parked by Memory Grove and headed up the canyon onto the Bonnivelle shoreline trail.

I'm considering doing the 10K on July 25th but I wanted to get a long run in so I did it this morning, getting up at 4AM, to give me time to recover by race date.

After waking up I chugged 32 oz of powerade and took off with a banana in hand.  Around the second mile I ate the banana.  With 2 mile left I finally got to take off the head lamp.  It was nice to get home.  I was thirsty.

Nice run Terry. Sounds like maybe the back is doing pretty good now? I probably should have done like you and got up bright and early and got my long run out of the way today. Guess I'll just try running real nice and easy tomorrow and hopefully by Monday I'll be ready for a decent race.

Dallas and I got up at 4:30am and I ate a half of banana and a little yougart with it.  Got a powerade and between me and Dallas we drank it before the start of the race.  The race started at 6:05 and we got their at 5:25.  We headed to the started and took advantage of the no lines at the porta potties.  Very soon after there were big lines.

It was 75' and cloudy at the start of the race.  Much warmer than I like it but at least the sun didn't hit us the last couple of miles of the race because of cloud cover.

I thought I was in similar condition to last year but I'm a year older so I didn't know if I could beat my time or not.  Also last year after heel pounding the race with big strides my knees were aching really bad after the race and then I developed a bad case of tenditis.  This year I've been focused on landing flat footed and running soft down the hills.  I don't feel like I run as fast down hill but I feel it causes less injury.  Mission accomplished, the knees were totally fine after the race.

I ran a near perfect race as far as I can tell.  With a mile left I was hurting but my legs were still doing fine.  With about a half a mile left my legs started burning so I knew I had run near perfect.  I ran hard the last mile but I didn't speed up much at the end cause my legs were getting a little wobbly.

I got 2nd of 52.  Last year I got 4th of 95.  Having it on a Monday this year instead of a Saturday like last year must have decreased the field size.

Dallas got a 42:53.  8th out of 43 in the 12-14 age group.  He ran well but about half way into the race his stomach started aching and he was very glad to find a porta potty near the finish.

Woke up at 3:40AM  I thought the race started at 6:30am not 7:00am.  Oh well, I arrived plenty early to get my bib and find the potty.  My son Dallas and my Sister-in-Law Jamie were also racing.  Dallas has been training with the High School cross country team.  Jamie's longest run was 3.5 miles.

The start was fairly cool.  Maybe 55'.  I like it cool.  The race director honked his horn and we were off.  My hands were cool for the first 3-4 miles then the temperature slowly started rising.  I felt I was moving at a fairly fast pace and was wondering if I'd be able to hold it the entire race.  There was a group of about 5 of us within about 25 yards of each other with Mary Ann usually leading the way and Jeff L. and Mikal E. in the mix.  We were in places 6-10.  We all traded places as we went through water stations and as we felt better or worse.

As we got near to the end positions finally took place.  At about mile 10 Mikal E. held on to 6th place for the rest of the race.  I ended up in 7th and for the first time passed Mary Ann at about mile 11, she took 8th with Jeff L taking 9th.

I got first in my age division and 2nd place in the masters division.

Drove up to Butterfield Canyon and did 2 down 5 up and 3 down.  The final 3 miles I did in 6:01 average.  I'm finally doing a little down hill running in preparation of the SGM down hills.  I could tell I need alot more downhill work before the SGM.  The elevation change at Butterfield was about 900 feet.  I then drove home and thought I'd run with Dallas but he actually got up out of bed on his own and went jogging before I got home.  After that nice 20 minute rest I went 7.65 more out and around Daybreak.

Terry I take it you haven't started tapering yet? It is tough recovering much with 9 miles and pace still under 8's. Be careful and don't hurt yourself. I wouldn't want to see you blow all this great training and end up hobbling to the finish line looking at my bum-itis.

From TBean on Fri, Sep 16, 2011 at 12:53:49 from 63.241.173.64

Tom, I'm starting a very light taper. Last week I ran 65 miles, this week I'm running 55 miles.

I don't believe in to much tapering until about 8 days before race day. And during those last 8 days I'll throw in some strides and a few MP miles.

Sandy Firestation Half marathon.  Sunny, temps between 55-60.

Last year they had this run but it was 18 miles and it made it by 5 firestations.  This year they changed it to a half marathon and the race only went by two firestations.

Race morning was near perftect temperatures and zero wind.  There were only a few people at the start that I thought may be able to beat me.  There were only about 60 people in the race.  As the race started a guy named Tom Perry that looked near my age or slighty older than me took off.  I let him get about 15 yards ahead of me after only a quarter mile and then I decided I wouldn't let him go at least for a few miles.  Tom and I were by ourselves the whole race.  A few times the first 5 miles I considered letting him go because I didn't want to over do it before the SGM.  But I just couldn't let him go knowing that I was staying with him.  Finally after about 6 miles I could tell he was finally slowing down just a bit and it felt much better and I started getting some confidence that I could win the race.  We ran side by side alot of the time.

I stayed with Tom until 1.5 miles left in the race were the course is level and down hill and then I decided to put him away.  I think I won by about 50 seconds.

I was thinking I'd just run 6 today because I ran a half Saturday and it's taper time but it was a nice day and I was feeling pretty good so I did 10 instead.

I'm hoping I can run the SGM in the same mile avg. as I just did the Half.  SG is down hill and the half started and finished in the same location with 2 big hills in the race.  Wondering if the down hill full marathon will be enough to let me go the same pace as a flat half marathon.

The anticipation of running the marathon is always alot of fun.  As usual, St. George put on another great marathon.

Me and my family are lucky enough to be old highschool friends with the Lee's and they let us stay with them in their Pleastant Palms Condo (A great place for a family to stay in St. George). Tom even drove me, Kim and Jeff to catch the buses.

As the weatherman had forecasted, it was a hot day for running a marathon.  Last year when I ran the UVM it was cold and rainy and I got a sub 3.  I do much better in cooler weather.  However, this year was the most miles I'd ever put into a marathon and I ran in the heat at lunch time a lot so I thought I may be able to get away from the cramping that I usually get when the temperatures get in the high 60's and 70's.

I went out at a 2:52 pace which I thought I could get if I had a near perfect marathon.  I was running well and felt like I could do it the first half of the marathon but about that time I could tell my legs weren't feeling as fresh as I thought they should.  I was still pushing well but I was starting to guess that my legs weren't going to hold up.  I probably should have backed off the pace around my 14 or 15 but I just couldn't give up the goal when my legs were still putting out at goal pace.  I usually drank two glasses of Gatorade at each aid station and ate quite a few bananas and oranges slices but it didn't do the trick.  By mile 20 I knew my legs weren't going to make it and so after I was walking and jogging due to cramping.  At that time I shifted my goal to a sub 3, but I soon realized no matter how much I wanted a sub 3 my legs were going to tell me what to do and I couldn't command them.

I was a little disappointed that my training didn't stop the cramping but it was good to see how weather affects me and how I may need to shift my goal times.

I wasn't planning on running this morning but I got woken up by Dallas with just enough time to get a 4 miler in, so I decided it was time to give the legs a little trial run to see if they still worked after the SGM.  Everything worked, but not enough freshness in the legs which is totally understandable.  Also, near the end of the run my right foot big toe kind of went numb. Weird.  Maybe the large volume of ice cream I've been eating isn't good for me.

I totally enjoyed the cool weather.  Looks like we missed the perfect SGM weather by one week.

The SOJO half was a pretty good run.  The elevation from the start to the finish is about a 500 foot drop.  The temperature just before the sun came up was 60' and it was windy.  The race started only 3 miles from my home so I dropped my car off Friday night at the finish and had Taunia drop me off at the start 10 minutes before the 7:45 AM starting time.  Much better than getting up early.

I took a quick bathroom check, made it to the starting line, talked to a few neighbors running the race and then away we went.  I liked the course because I've run on almost all of the course from time to time.

It didn't take to long until John from SLC, maybe in his late 20's took off by himself and left me, George from SJ, Arianne from Eagle Mtn. and Zac from WJ in the next group.  John was running about 20 seconds per mile faster than us so it didn't take to long until he was out of sight.  The 4 of use ran together until the temple hill, where Zac let us go.  I like Zac because he said he wanted to be like me when he gets old.  Then the pack was down to 3.  Me, Arianne and George who I found out was 54.  The pressure was on because I didn't want to get chicked or beaten by a guy 8 years older than myself.  At about mile 5 the George put some distance on us.  At about mile 6 I finally pushed ahead of Arianne and was in 3rd place.  I didn't catch the George until mile 9.  We ran together for a mile then he started fading so I was in 2nd place just where I wanted to be.  On the last two miles of the river path my left quad started acting like it wanted to cramp a little so I slowed it down and kept looking behind just in case someone would catch me.  They never got close so I could just stroll in.

I had a great race and it made me feel a little better about not going sub 3 at SG.

After the race I ate a couple of Fat Boys, yum, and yogart and chicken sandwich and walked back on the course 2.25 miles and waited for Andy Russell.  He was hoping for a 3:30 but he went out to fast the 1st half of the marathon and died at the end.  It was getting warm for a marathon and windy by the end.  I paced him in but he was dead and his legs were cramping a little.  It was good to see him again.  He had a great time of 3:43 for someone 240lbs.

Nice job on the race! Incredible you guys can even run just 2 weeks after St George. It amazes me!

Congrats on not getting chicked. ;o)

Great job Terry! Wasn't sure what would happen to you just 2 weeks after SGM. Always nice to have a great race soon after a bummer one. And great you could go drag The Dud in to the finish. He is pretty dang fast for such a big guy, I imagine he dominates the Clydesdale Division. Maybe we need to pace him to his BQ sometime.

Nice job on the race- I was running in the 50-54 age group and couldn't believe how George was able to keep that pace up. I would like to run that same course again without the wind and about 10-15 degrees cooler

Dallas and the cross country team was doing a 12 hour relay run around the track to raise money for the team.  Each team member ran a mile.  Dallas was the 4th runner.  They started at 6AM with the football stadium lights on.  Nice.  The track had about 2 inches of snow on it.  Since I drove Dallas and a couple other runners down to the track I decided I'd just get my morning run in at the track.  I started a couple of laps before the team did.  I got 2.5 miles in and then I quit running a couple of minutes before it was Dallas's turn so I could run with him.  Dallas took off pretty fast with a 78 second 1st lap and I thought that it was going to be tough to hang with him but then he let up a little and I new I could stay with him at that pace.  I passed him with 300 yards to go and he let me go without a fight.  Where is the eye of the tiger in that boy?  I ran a 5:40 and he probably got a 5:45.  The snow definately was a pain.

Seems like you don't find too many teenagers with the eye of the tiger quite yet when it comes to running. I've offered big $$ prize to any of my kids who can beat in any race longer than a mile but so far none of them have even considered it for a second.

It is nice to see that you signed up for the Riverton Half (I am registered as well). I believe the course has changed a bit since you ran it last. If you are up for a run on the course over the next few months just let me know. And here is hoping to a little less wind this time around (last year was quite windy as well).

Me and Dallas ran to my parents home where my two youngest were staying overnight.  I was hoping it would be 5 or more miles but it ended up being only 4.3 miles.  Dallas got a side ache which slowed our time down.

This was a good year for jogging.  I ran more miles this year than I ever have.  I changed my running style to a shorter stride length and a flat foot landing underneath my body.  The new stlye dramatically reduced knee pain I was experiencing.  I was thinking my running hobby was coming to an end before the new running style.
