I was still a little sore from Monday's run.  I guess if you don't run for 3 weeks you get sore.

Mr. Lee I don't think I'll be racing you anytime soon because you'd whoop me good.  However, I'm contemplating running the Provo City 1/2 on 5/1/10 so you can finally take me down.

Since I felt good this morning I decided I'd test out the system and do a fast run.  The word to describe the experience is PAIN.  When I'm not in great shape and I run really hard I get the blood taste in my mouth and I got it this morning, so I new I'd run hard.  Now my body, a couple hours after, still feels weak.  Hopefully, I can gain 30 seconds a mile on my fast workout as I get in better shape over the next few months.

I think I'll pass on the Rex Lee 10K. I think the odds are still in your favor. A month ago it was 95 to 5% in your favor. I think a 10K right now is still 70% in your favor. I need another month to even out the odds.

This was the 1st year of the Shamrock half marathon in Saratoga Springs.  It was 25 degrees at the starting line.  Luckily it warmed up to about 35' by the end of the run.  I would think there were just over a hundred runners.

The course is a loop course that has a few hills with the high point of the race at the 8.5 mile mark which is about a 400 ft elevation gain from the start but it felt like more.

After a few hundered yards I was in 9th place and at the 1 mile mark I was in 7th.  At the 2 mile mark I was in 5th.  I stayed in 5th until mile 6 and got passed.  I let him go.  I was trying to run a smart race.  The guy that passed me took a wrong turn an lost about 1 minute.  I help yell at him and got him turned around.  He almost caught up to me but after reaching the high point of the race I picked up the pace a little on the down hill and held him off to finish in 5th pace.

I woke up with a light headache and not much desire to go out into the winter weather.  Luckily the 8 min. man came along to taunt me.  The first six miles are up grade and the next two miles are level then 5.5 miles back down to home.  After one mile 8 was ahead, after two I was up but then he took over as the up grade plus wind held me back.  At mile six 8 was over a minute ahead and I thought I was pushing hard.  To many M&M's.  Luckily the rest of the way was back home and not against the wind.  I over took 8 just after mile nine and didn't have to worry about him again.

Darcie decided we should do the School district 5K and Kids mile.  I ran 5.25 miles to the race that was on the Jordan River path.  My legs still weren't recoved from Wed & Thur.  There were about 100 runners in the 5K.  When the gun went off my legs hurt.  They didn't want to go fast.  Luckily after a quarter mile things stared lossening up.  After a quarter mile I was in about 10th, after a half mile I was in about 4th, and at the first mile marker I was in 2nd.  I followed a youngster that was about 16 until about a half mile left and then I poured it on and passed him with my final push speed.  He thought about staying with me for a short time and then faded.

Mile one 6:11

Mile two 6:29

Mile three 5:55

Cambrey my 16 year old got 1st in her age division.  There were only two.

Darcie (7) ran her mile in 10:15 (I ran with Darcie)

Kenna (4) ran her mile in about 11:30 (Taunia ran with Kenna)

Hey as far as UVM it turns out they have a facebook page where runners can swap entries around. I should have checked with you first I didn't think you had any interest in running it. I already have one person who wanted my entry and I responded to them on the price and I haven't heard back. If I don't hear from them in the next day or 2 I'll sell you my entry for the early bird price I got of $60 if you're still interested.

Terry the thing that helps me most is NOT doing speedwork in the morning or when I'm not good and warmed up first.

Also getting up an moving/walking around often (every hour or so) at work and so I'm sitting on the fanny for long periods of time. Long road trips can be the worst.

I think lots of variation in the runs helps to - mix of hills, speed, distance, etc.

And finally working the hammies over regularly with the "Stick" seems to help.

I find icing to be pretty much useless on the bum-itis. I think once you get the itis then you're past the point of icing helping anything.

I'm trying to hold all my runs under 8 except for Saturday long runs and possibly a Friday so I can feel good for the Saturday long run. I'm just seeing if I can handle it and if I feel like it makes me stronger or not.

So far I think I get more benefit than loss from staying under 8 Mon-Thur.

Was discomforted to hear that someone was stabbed to death yesterday at 8PM on the section of the Jordan River path that I usually run on a couple of times a week at lunchtime.

Life is not fair.  I'm glad that justice is sometimes handled in this life but always will be dealt with properly in the next life.

I wondered if that was in your neck of the trail Terry. Glad you weren't anywhere in the vicinity at that time. Hope this doesn't mean runners on the JRP have to be looking over there shoulder all the time.

Dallas had a soccer tournament, so I had to get up at 5:30 on a holiday to get the run in.  I got in 244 miles this month.  The most miles I've ever run in a month as far as I know.  I always start cramping up between miles 16-20 on all marathons I've run in the last 6-7 years.  I'm hoping the higher mileage in May will help this problem at UVM.

Terry I just looked at the forecast for Saturday and I think it looks pretty good for a non-cramping marathon. It might even rain and as I recall you didn't seem to have any cramping problems as you blew past me that last mile at SGM 2008 when I WAS having some cramping problems. I'm hoping the schedule works for Kim and I to be at the finish to cheer you in.

It was cloudy with a temp. of 45' at the starting line and just before the race it started to sprinkle.  It was fine for the first 6 miles then it started to rain.  It rained for about the next 6-8 miles then it was over for the rest of the race with a finish line temp of about 55'.

I did not jog before the race.  Just walked about a half mile and stretched out.  I started the race trying not to go to fast knowing that I always cramp up near the end of the race.  I hit the half way point at almost exactly were I'd planned, 90 minutes.  I was feeling good and getting my hopes up that maybe, just maybe, I could run all the way to the finish line.  At mile 17 I got a little knot in my left calf that was a different feeling than cramping up.  I felt it most the way in at different levels but it never effected the race.

At mile 21 I was really getting my hopes up, but I could tell that my legs were getting pounded.  I wanted to break lose with some 6:20 miles but I knew that would increase the odds of cramping.  At mile 23 my legs were definately letting me know that they were not going to hold out to much longer.  I had plenty of energy and mental toughness but not the legs to do it with.  I kept up the pace and it wasn't until mile 25.5 that my legs started shutting down and I had to slow down and do some funny shuffle type running.  There was a guy that was in my age division that I let pass me at mile 24 and was hoping to pass him at the end but I just had to be happy with a sub 3.

Eating:  I ate a homemade wheat bread sandwich and a half a banana 2hrs before the race.  I had a half a banana 5 minutes before the race.  At mile 9 I had a half a gel, mile 11 quarter banana, mile 15 half gel, mile 19 quarter banana, mile 24 quarter banana.  I had poweraid at all stations.

Race started at 6AM, winds calm, temperature about 70' and no sun until after the race was finished.

I rode up with my neighbors the Reeves.  It was nice to relax on the way over to the race.  I was hoping to run at a 5:59 pace or faster.  I achieved my goal. I ran at a 5:50 pace according to Garmin which also said I ran 6.25 miles.

Mile 1 5:27
Mile 2 5:27
Mile 3 5:55
Mile 4 5:56
Mile 5 5:50
Mile 6 6:18
Mile 6.2 6:06

I was only 3 seconds behind 3rd place in my age division.  With about 3/4 of a mile left I knew I was going to accomplish my goal and didn't have further insentive to run extra hard to the finish.  Also, I don't know who is in my age division or what place I was in.  I think as I get older I lose some of my competitivness.  I need a good rivalry to get me to push to the limits at the end of a race.  It would be way cool to see at every mile marker what overall place you are in and your age division position.

Saw a lot of neighbors and a few running friends at the finish.  I saw the two Kenya type runners battleing for 1st place in the marathon.  The guy in 2nd passed the 1st place guy with only 1 block left. It was fun to watch.

Terry! What the heck did you do to yourself old man?! I don't like the sound of that.

Maybe you just need to take a week or 2 off, bag the race SGM plans and just run a sub-4 with me and Kim.

Wow just noticed we both ran 6 miles at 7:53 pace. Did you copy me? But I'm betting you're ave HR was lower than my 174. But I DID run the first 3 miles the canyon and into a stiff headwind.

My work has a small run down gym, but after a week of not exercising and still having pain in my leg I decided the gym wasn't that bad.  I rode the sit down type bike for 5 minutes and did 10 on the eliptical.  Just before I finished a few older Asian women that work on the floor must have been on break but they came and laid down on the floor or sat down on equimpent to rest.  At least the room gets some use.  Maybe next week I'll really go for it and exercise 20 minutes.

Terry I feel your pain regarding being stuck in the gym. Big time bummer. I guess this injury you have must be fairly significant?

But I also feel your joy mixed with pain regarding sending your boy to the MTC. They are missed greatly while they're gone but it does make 1 day a week pretty exciting when that letter/email comes. And then when they come home they're all polished and shiny!

If I wasn't signed up for the SGM I wouldn't care about being sidelined as much.

Anyway, the pain is going down a bit due to being careful not to aggreivate it. I don't know what I have. It is a pain on the inside of my leg just below knee cap level. It doesn't seem to be associated with the knee at all. I can't tell if it is a tendon or some kind of stress fracture. I can't locate it by pushing on it, I have to be standing and moving or streching a certain way to feel the pain.

My boss is in town this week or I would have schedule a Doc visit. Maybe next week after I get back from Lake Powell.

Went to the Doc. this morning, they took X-rays and found out I have very healthy knees.  He said my knees have many more miles left in them.  He also said I have Pes Anserine Tendonitis, which is the swollen ham sting tendons that rap around the inside of your knee.  He gave me some stretches to lenghten out the tendons and told me to start running 2-3 times a week with a long run going from this Satuday of 8 miles to next Saturday of 12, then 16.

He gave me a perscription for Prednisone if strechting and icing don't do the trick.  I'm suppose to call in and tell him how todays run went and continue to call in weekly.  I should have gone in earlier but I was so busy and I thought it would go away on its own.

SGM here I come!

I didn't notice my tendonoitis on the up hill but on the down hill it was raring its ulgy self.  I ran the up slope miles in the same time I ran the down slope miles just so my tendonitis wouldn't hurt as much.  My doc. said it was probably the down hill that caused it and to stay away from down hill running for awhile.

The Doc. started me on my cortoson type pills Friday.  Hopefully, the pills will kick in and at least temporarily take care of the problem as I try to stretch out the tendons.

I'm not use to running 10 miles any more.  I was getting tired at the end.  I've run more miles by Sept 4th than I ran the entire month of August.  Hopefully, my body can handle the quick pickup into running mode.

Glad the uphill worked for you Terry but too bad about the dang downhill. Hope things keep improving so you can enjoy SGM and won't be wanting to run the course in reverse.

So do you think it was the downhill of your 24th of July 10K that triggered this whole thing?

From TBean on Sat, Sep 04, 2010 at 14:15:23 from 75.169.120.110

After reading more about it and talking to the doctor, I think it was the week before the 24th where I did a big down hill run fast and then the next week of the 24th down hill at race pace that triggered it. It hurt for the 1st time the Monday after the Saturday 24th race.

Long distance and down hill are the two primary reasons for runners to get the inside tendon to ache. So be careful as you have been to ramp up to downhill running and not be dumb like me and just bang out two hard down hills without paying the price of gradually working into it. I guess I need to remember I'm not 20 anymore.

Evening run, temp 85'

Dallas's Soccer coach asked for a volunteer to help condition the team once a week.  My wife volunteered me.  We did core stuff and did a 2 mile run and some sprints and some relay games.  For the 2 mile run I had garmin hold me to an 8 minute mile.  Most of the boys stayed with me, some started lagging the second mile.  They all thought it was cruel punishment.

My leg is still bugging me.  I was hoping those pills would do the trick.  When I do the stretches prescribed it always makes it hurt.  I'll have to ask the Doc to see if I'm suppose to stretch it the way they showed cause it flares it up.  However, when I took several weeks off and made sure I wasn't doing anything to make it flare up it didn't go away.  Stupid leg.

I hope I can make it to the finish line at SGM with this new low mileage program I'm on.

Sandy Fire Station 18 Mile run.

The race started at 7:35am with a temperature of 64' and the temp. was 75' at the finish.  The 1st 10 miles climbs about 800-900 ft then you come back down to the start in the last 8 miles.  There are a few sections around mile 8 & 9 that were pretty steep as you get closer to the canyons.  The race goes by 5 different fire stations.

I stared out the race way to fast.  I tried to tell myself this was a training run for the SGM but my mind wouldn't listen.  At about mile 5 at the second fire station I was in 4th place and there were 2 guys right behind me.  They were suppose to tell us to turn around but they said go straight.  Before they realize there error the top 6 runners were heading to nowhere.  A truck picked up the 1st 3 runners and a motorcycle cop turned me around and the 2 guys right behind me.  The truck then came to pick us up but by that time I was back to the fire station and just thought I'd get a little extra training in.  I wasn't thinking about placing and if they had prize money.  The two guys that were just behind me hopped in the truck and off they went.  I didn't have anyone in front of me for about 5 miles as I was in 6th place.

My legs were getting hammered worse than I thought they would.  I'm just not in the shape I would like to be in.   I passed 5th place at about mile 10 and caught up to 4th place at about mile 13 and ran with him for about 4 miles.  My legs were more wasted then I was hoping they'd be for the pace I put them through but I decide to push the last 1.5 miles.  I left Mr. 4th place and to my suprise I saw 3rd and 2nd up a ways.  I decided I might as well pass them and take 2nd.  I did just that with a fast last mile around the 6 minute mark.  I got $50 in gift certificates to Sports Authority.  The winner beat me by about 2 minutes and got $75.  If I would have got a ride in the truck I'd have won.  No big deal.  Hope this helps my SGM time.

My tendonitis only hurts a little for the 1st mile then it mostly goes away.  I'm not sure if it is the IBProfin kicking in or my body's chemicals working.  But my ball of my right foot has been tender the last few runs.  It feels like it is swollen so you get the feel that your shoe is pushing up into the ball of your foot.  My old man body just doesn't want to cooperate lately.

Ran 3 one mile runs with pushups and situps etc inbetween.  I figured out how to motivate the players.  I told them I'd run at an 8 minute pace and if everyone didn't beat me we would have to do an extra mile.  Amazingly everyone beat me easily all 3 miles.

The SOJO half started in Cooperton in the sun at about 8:10 and dropped in elevation 1200 feet to the river bottoms of South Jordan.  The 1st 11 miles have all the drop and the last 2 miles are flat running along the river bottom.  When I finished the temperatures were only in the mid to upper 60's.  This was the first year of the race and I think they had to many people register for a 1st year run.  I think between the full, half and 5K they had over 800.  Anyway, they had busing problems.  About 2 or 3 buses worth started at 8:30.  They also sent the half marathon on the same finish as the full marathon which added about .3-.4 tens of a mile to the half.  However, the finish was great food wise.  I love Fat Boy Ice Cream sandwiches.  They had bagels, and muffins and fruit etc...

I'm not sure what place I came in because I had to leave to get to Soccer games.  However, I do know that I got chicked.

I came in 10th overall out of 450 and 1st of 12 in my age division.

I tried to hold back a little so I wouldn't waist my legs for St. George, I decided I'd try to run around 7 minute miles.  Taunia meet me on her bike for a couple of miles around mile 6 & 7 and I slowed down so I could talk better.  When I hit the river path I decided to push the pace.  The 1st mile on the path felt pretty good but the 2nd mile started hurting and then when the race went 0.4 miles long it kept hurting more than I was hoping for.  I probably passed about 5-6 people on the river path and a few of them looked like they were around my age division.

Currently, I'm planning on running with Matt, a member of my Ragnar team that is running his 1st marathon and is hoping to qualify for Boston with a 3:20.

I feel like I'm in 3:10 shape but with the low mileage I'm guessing I'd cramp up like I usually do with low mileage. I'm hoping going at 3:20 will allow me to stay cramp free. For me this is a fun run and I'll be happy with whatever time I get. Unless Tom decides to race and then I'd probably challenge him so if he beat me it would be a real race.

Stayed with Tom and Kim at their Pleasant Palms Condo.  Much better than a hotel!  A great please to vacation with a family.  The day before the race we went swimming, shuffle board, miniture golf, etc..

Tom drove us to the start.  It is always nice to get to relax on the way to the starting line.

Warmest start to the St. George Marathon so far.  I only ran 13 miles in August and couldn't train good in September because of Tendonitis so I new I wouldn't be anywhere near my Sub 3 time in June.  I always cramp up on low miles if I push to hard.  So I decided to run behind the 3:20 pace guy so I wouldn't go out to fast.  I was also hoping to run with Matt Larson who was going to do the same.  However, Matt started back to far in the pack so he didn't ever catch up to the pace guy.

This ended up being a near perfect pace.  I could tell after only a few miles that my last weeks half marathon didn't leave my legs fresh.  My calves were tired and aching some.  I ate about the equivalent of 3 bananas along the way and a couple of mini cliff bars.  I also drank gatorade and water at about every stop also pooring some water on my back, hoping this would help with the cramping.  From mile 15 on my legs were going back and forth trying to decide if they would cramp up.  With 3 miles left my legs were doing ok so I tried to push and see if I could run some sub 7 miles.  I was at about a 6:45 pace for that final push and then my legs said "Not doing this or it's Cramping time" so I had to slow it back down.

Today is the best the tendons have felt all week. I don't get it? You'd think that 3 days in a row would make it worse. I've been trying to not over do it or under do it by just beating the 8 minute guy. The 1st mile is always the worst and then the tendons seem to loosen up a bit and let me jog as long as I never go straight legged but keep my knee bent I'm ok.

The Las Vegas Ragnar was great.  It had a lot of rolling hills that seemed to catch my team by suprise.  I ran legs 7 & 9.  Taunia was going to run the 1st leg of leg 9 and I'd to the rest but her PF was bad and there was a lot going on so she stayed home and let me run them all.

My plan was to run at marathon pace and then hammer the last leg as best as I could.  I stuck to the plan until my 5th leg when I heard someone catching up to me on my way up a good mountain pass and I decided to kick it into race gear and I'm proud to say no one passed me the entire race.  The problem with kicking it into race gear on the 5th leg was that it waisted me for the last leg and my legs started cramping up with 3 miles to go.  My last two miles of the race were just over 10 minute miles.  Maybe if I would have had more than 40 minutes to recover from the 10 mile 5th leg I might have been able to get a little better time.

Our team got 4th place in the Coed SubMaster division missing 3rd place by only 5 minutes.  If we wouldn't have had a lost runner once or I wouldn't have cramped up we may have got 3rd place.  We were 43rd out of the 400 teams with a time of 28:38.

Woke up with a head ache, wasn't excited to get out.  The 1st mile seemed hard then I started warming up.  I pushed the 4th downhill mile in 5:55 to get ready for next weeks Stake fun run.

My shin splints and Tendon-bum-itis came along for the jog to make sure I didn't go too fast.  I did see a grasshopper on the path. It jumped at least 2 inches when I went by.  Lucky for him no seagulls in the area.

8AM Stake fun run, windy, cloudy, temp 45'

We only had about 30 people show up, mostly adults.  At 9AM my ward was having a Turkey bowl, two hand touch, so I didn't want to use up to much energy on the course unless I had to to get a win.  I was in 1st place with Wayne for about a half a mile but then he started to slow down so I kept going at about a 7 minute pace.  I felt a little guilty for not pushing the pace in a race but I beat the 2nd place person by 2 minutes, and I'm getting old, and it's the off season, and.....

Sounds like a good training plan Terry with the low miles and high treat intake. I think you should follow that program the next 7 months and then run UVM with me in June.

From Kim on Tue, Nov 30, 2010 at 17:48:48 from 67.199.180.90

I'm glad you got those .25 threshold miles in! You wouldn't want to have 2 whole miles of "easy"!

From TBean on Thu, Dec 02, 2010 at 15:50:11 from 63.241.173.64

I was debating whether to push .25 at threshold after such a long run, but I dug down deep and found the strength.

Not to worry Terry. I'm sure you could still beat me even if you get fat and don't even run before UVM. And you should always listen to Taunia.

With two big meals yesterday I had plenty of stored up energy, in fact I feel a little like a camel exept my hump is growing around my belly and not my back.  Bum-itis came along for the run and my back was tight, but other than that it was a great run.

This was the most miles in a week (16.6) I've run since back in October.

Camels, bum-itis, tight back, great run, gotta love all that stuff! Terry I think we should do a little experiment where your weekly miles never exceeds my Saturday long run miles. We should see if that is still enough mileage for you to beat me. Better yet you should keep eating tons of food as well. It would be a good scientific study that could benefit the running community and maybe all mankind.

Nice 8 miler Terry. This dang weather is not so helpful for getting in a good running groove. On a side note - today coming back from St. George we saw Bob in the Cedar City Walmart parking lot. He was his usual happy smiley self and Kim and I enjoyed our short chat (short since it was so dang cold and windy) with him. And he looked pretty fit as usual too.
